Libraries serve as more than just book storage facilities. They are safe havens for people of all ages and backgrounds, portals to information, and vital resources for communities. However, this would not be feasible without the commitment of library staff members.
These unheralded heroes take on multiple roles. They manage digital resources, suggest books to read, assist with research, curate collections, plan events and programs, and more. They are information experts, IT geniuses, and welcoming individuals who put a smile on everyone’s face.

“Libraries Work Because We Do!” is the topic for National Library Workers Day in 2024, and it encapsulates the essence of the celebration. Although libraries provide a wealth of information and services, none of them would be possible without the dedicated work of their personnel.

Here are some ideas for how you may thank library staff members today—and every day! —for their services:
- Express gratitude! A simple “I appreciate what you do” or “Thanks for your help” can make a big difference.
- Make a Star Nomination! Is there a specific library employee who stands out for providing outstanding service? Honor them by putting them forward for the National Library Workers Day (ALA-APA Galaxy of Stars) nomination.
- Give your library a boost! Participate in a library event, make friends with the library, or just give books or gently used materials.
- Get the word out! Share your admiration for libraries and librarians on social media
